Ice Storm! (4/9/13 - 4/11/13)

South Dakota is definitely the Land of Infinite Variety when it comes to weather.  It was Tuesday, April 9, yet we had one of the worst ice storms SD has ever seen!  It was awful and tragic to many of the trees and frozen food in Becca's freezer!  It rained and snowed and the heavy snow clung to the trees and bent them terribly.  New trees just bent, but older, larger trees snapped.  You could hear the loud sounds of the ice everywhere!

As usual in our neighborhood, everyone was out helping everyone else.

Al Fix, across the street, had his tree branch come close to his roof but didn't harm it.
Our street just had a narrow path down the middle.

All over the city tree branches had fallen on vehicles and I saw many vehicles with lots of damage.
Our sign outside our door was covered in thick ice.
The trees in the VA parking lot were pretty but dangerous.  They announced during the day if anyone was parked under or near a tree to move their vehicles.  I was lucky and parked far enough when the tree by my car fell, it went the other way and not on our car.

This tree by the Regional Office did not do well.  Most of it's branches snapped off.

Pretty, but tragic for many trees!

I usually drove past McKennan Park on my way to and from work.  It was a beautiful drive, but I avoided it for a few days because of all the downed trees and the falling ice.  Many, many trees in the Park were down.

This is the corner of 22nd and Minnesota looking west.

Doug's trees next door fell on our fence.

Al Fix's tree in his front yard was badly damaged.  He decided to have it torn down and it provided us with an afternoon of entertainment!

The city was wonderful to everyone.  They spent a lot of time and money on clearing the branches and trees from all over town.
The electricity went off and on everywhere.  We were lucky and only lost it for a few hours at a time.  Becca was not as lucky.  She was out of electricity for about 4 days and stayed with Steph.  She lost almost everything in her refrigerator and freezer.  Josh had left town for San Francisco on Monday, ahead of the storm.  Steph tried to join him, but spent 2 days at the airport trying to get a flight.  They were all cancelled and she decided to give up.  Grandma Hall lost electricity for a few days and she stayed with us those days. What a storm!  This was one for the record books!  Josh came home on Sunday, April 14 and we drove him around town to see the ravages of the storm.  But by then many things had melted and looked so much better.
